Current AI systems do not need to be conscious, malicious, or self-aware to create risks; errors, poor objectives, flawed data, excessive automation, weak oversight, security failures, or inappropriate deployment can produce harmful outcomes without any machine "rebellion."

Researchers and policymakers study issues including AI alignment, interpretability, human oversight, algorithmic bias, automation bias, autonomous weapons, model security, accountability, and governance because increasingly capable systems can affect increasingly consequential decisions.

Science fiction has long explored scenarios in which machines built to protect or serve humanity gain excessive control, but those fictional scenarios are not evidence that a self-aware supercomputer is currently preparing to overthrow its creators.

There is no verified modern supercomputer that has physically blasted its engineering team out of:
