Humanity spent thousands of years staring at the sky.
Then we invented a six-inch rectangle interesting enough to make us stop.

For most of human history, looking up mattered.
The sky told people when daylight was coming.
Where the seasons were changing.
When weather might arrive.
Where directions could be found.
When crops might be planted.
It contained the Sun, Moon, planets, stars, comets, eclipses and occasional phenomena that could inspire wonder, fear or both.
The sky wasn't background.
It was information.

Ancient cultures observed celestial movements with extraordinary care.

Religious traditions incorporated astronomical events.
Humanity looked upward because useful information was written across the sky.

Very large impacts are rare, but Earth's geological record makes one thing clear:
Sometimes space reaches the ground.

Asteroids are real enough that scientists actively track near-Earth objects.
Astronomers discover and calculate the orbits of objects that pass through Earth's astronomical neighborhood.

This is not conspiracy theory.
It's celestial housekeeping.
Earth occupies space.
Space contains rocks.
Scheduling conflicts occasionally occur.

Approximately 66 million years ago, a large asteroid struck Earth near what is now Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula.
The Chicxulub impact is strongly associated with the mass extinction event that eliminated the non-avian dinosaurs along with many other species.
For decades, humanity has turned that event into a joke.

Modern astronomy gives us something the dinosaurs didn't have:
Detection.
Telescopes can discover and track many potentially hazardous objects years or decades before a possible close approach.
NASA's DART mission even demonstrated asteroid-deflection technology in 2022 by intentionally striking Dimorphos and measurably changing its orbit around a larger asteroid.
Humanity has officially reached the stage where we can punch an asteroid with a spacecraft.
That's genuinely impressive.
Assuming someone looks up from the phone long enough to launch it.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗨𝗙𝗢
Then there's the other thing humans have spent generations looking for in the sky.
The unidentified.
UFO reports have described lights, discs, spheres, triangles, cylinders and objects observers couldn't immediately identify.
Today, UAP is commonly used in official contexts.
Unidentified does not automatically mean extraterrestrial.
But culturally, one strange object overhead still produces the same instinct:
LOOK UP.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗔𝗗𝗢𝗫
This creates an interesting contradiction.
Human beings are fascinated by the possibility of extraordinary things in the sky.
UFO documentaries.
Meteor videos.
Rocket launches.
Eclipses.
Comets.
Northern lights.
We will watch millions of videos of these things...
on screens.
The universe has become content.
Sometimes we're watching a video of the sky instead of the actual sky directly above us.

The modern smartphone may be the most successful attention machine ever created.
Communication.

Almost every major category of information humans once obtained from separate tools now exists inside one device.
It's difficult to compete with something carrying half of civilization in your pocket.
Meteor:

Someone replied to your comment.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡
Human attention is limited.
We cannot consciously process everything happening around us.
The brain selects.
Filters.
Prioritizes.
Ignores.
That's necessary.
Without selective attention, ordinary life would become overwhelming.
The problem begins when something extremely good at demanding attention enters the environment.
Phones don't merely contain information.
They compete for your eyes.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗡𝗢𝗧𝗜𝗙𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡
A notification is tiny.
A sound.
A vibration.
A red badge.
A line of text.
Yet it can interrupt conversation, work, driving, meals and almost anything else.
Why?
Because it promises information.
Something happened.
Someone responded.
Something changed.
Maybe it's important.
Probably not.
Better check.

There is always another image.

Another argument.

Another joke.
Another advertisement.
Human curiosity once helped us explore continents.
Now it helps us discover what happens in the next fifteen-second clip.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗟𝗚𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗛𝗠
Many digital platforms use recommendation systems to decide what content users are likely to engage with.
The goal is usually relevance and continued engagement.
Watch something.
The system learns.
Click something.
The system learns.
Ignore something.
That can become information too.
The feed becomes increasingly personalized.
The universe offers one sky to everyone.
Your phone offers one universe specifically optimized for you.
That's difficult competition.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡
Distraction isn't new.
Humans have always found ways to avoid paying attention.
Books were once accused of distracting people.
Radio.
Television.
Video games.
Computers.
Every generation discovers a new technology and worries that the next generation is staring at it too much.
Sometimes those concerns are exaggerated.
Sometimes the technology really does change behavior.
Usually both can be true.

Walking while looking at a phone is a perfect modern visual.
The body continues through physical space.
The mind is somewhere else.
Feet:
SIDEWALK.
Eyes:
SCREEN.
Brain:
VIDEO OF A RACCOON STEALING CAT FOOD.
The person remains physically present while attention has effectively left the scene.
That makes it an ideal image for DON'T LOOK UP.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗟𝗗 𝗔𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗗 𝗨𝗦
The problem isn't that phones are inherently bad.
They're enormously useful.
The problem is that useful things can become absorbing enough to obscure everything around them.
People.
Traffic.
Nature.
Architecture.
Weather.
Events.
Other people also looking at phones.
Reality doesn't disappear.
It simply loses the bidding war for attention.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗥𝗢𝗡𝗘
While we're looking down, technology is increasingly operating above us.
Drones have become common tools for photography, surveying, inspection, agriculture, mapping, public safety, research, recreation and military operations.
Small unmanned aircraft can hover, record video and observe areas from perspectives once requiring helicopters or aircraft.
The sky now contains cameras.
Some obvious.
Some less so.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗨𝗥𝗩𝗘𝗜𝗟𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘
Surveillance technology has also become increasingly ordinary.
Security cameras appear around homes, businesses, streets, parking lots, transportation systems and workplaces.
Many people pass cameras every day without consciously noticing them.
That's one of the strangest things about surveillance.
The camera can remain visible while becoming psychologically invisible.
Nothing has to be hidden if everyone stops looking at it.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗔𝗠𝗘𝗥𝗔
A surveillance camera mounted ahead of someone walking creates a particularly uncomfortable relationship.
The person isn't looking at the camera.
The camera is looking at the person.
One side is attentive.
The other isn't.
That's the reversal.
The human believes he's the user of technology.
Meanwhile, technology is observing the user.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗔
Modern digital life also produces information beyond photographs and video.
Location data.
Searches.
Purchases.
Clicks.
Viewing behavior.
Device identifiers.
Account activity.
Communication metadata.
Exactly what is collected depends on the service, device, settings and circumstances.
But collectively, modern life can generate extensive digital traces.
You don't have to look at the system for the system to register you.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗣𝗛𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗔𝗚𝗔𝗜𝗡
That makes the smartphone an especially interesting object.
It distracts.
It informs.
It connects.
It records.
It navigates.
It entertains.
It can also generate data about how it is being used.
The device in your hand can simultaneously be:
WINDOW.
CAMERA.
MAP.
TELEVISION.
STORE.
TRACKER.
OFFICE.
SOCIAL LIFE.
And apparently the reason you missed the UFO.

UFO culture spent decades imagining people desperately trying to photograph strange objects.
WHERE'S THE CAMERA?

DID YOU SEE THAT?
Modern human:
Already holding an advanced digital camera connected to a global communications network.
Also modern human:
Didn't see it.
Technological progress has a sense of humor.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗘𝗩𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘
This creates another modern paradox.
There are billions of cameras in circulation through smartphones and other devices.
Yet extraordinary claims still face the same problem:
Evidence must be clear, verifiable and properly contextualized.
More cameras create more recordings.
They also create more misidentifications, editing, compression artifacts and manipulated media.
Then generative AI arrives.
Now even a spectacular image can produce:
FAKE.
Humanity finally put a camera in everyone's pocket and simultaneously made photographs easier to doubt.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗨𝗙𝗢 𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗩𝗘
In the design, the UFO isn't attacking.
That's important.
It's simply there.
A classic extraordinary event.
Something generations of UFO enthusiasts would desperately want to witness.
The man doesn't notice.
He has a phone.
The joke isn't that the UFO is invisible.
The joke is that attention can make the obvious invisible.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗠𝗘𝗧𝗘𝗢𝗥 𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗩𝗘
The meteor raises the stakes.
A UFO might be mysterious.
A meteor could be dangerous.
Yet the man's posture doesn't change.
Same stride.

Same downward gaze.
The world could be becoming dramatically more important above him...
and the screen remains more immediate.
Urgency has become a competition for notification privileges.

Then comes the drone.
Unlike the UFO or meteor, the drone represents something much closer to ordinary reality.
It's not a distant cosmic mystery.
It's technology already here.
Following.
Watching.
Recording.
The man doesn't notice that either.
The extraordinary and the everyday are now sharing airspace.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗔𝗠𝗘𝗥𝗔 𝗔𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗗
The surveillance camera waiting farther along his path completes the visual trap.
Something watches from behind.
Something watches from ahead.
Something unexplained occupies the sky.
Something dangerous streaks overhead.
The man occupies the center of an entire ecosystem of events...
while mentally existing somewhere inside the screen.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗣𝗔𝗧𝗛
The side-view walking composition is important because it creates movement.
The man isn't standing still.
He's progressing through the scene.
That means the surveillance camera ahead isn't merely decoration.
He's walking toward it.
The drone isn't simply floating nearby.
It's trailing him.
The image becomes a timeline.
Behind.
Present.
Ahead.
Observation continues.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗜𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡
His body moves forward.
His attention moves downward.
That's the central visual contradiction.
Forward physically.
Downward mentally.
The composition doesn't need a complicated metaphor.

"Don't Look Up" also carries an obvious modern cultural association with the 2021 satirical film about scientists trying to warn society of a comet approaching Earth.
The phrase works beyond that specific movie because it captures a broader idea:
What happens when something enormous is happening in plain sight and attention is directed somewhere else?
In this design, nobody has to order the man not to look up.
The phone has already handled it.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗔𝗟
Distraction and denial aren't the same thing.
That's an important distinction.
Someone can understand a danger and reject it.
Someone else may never notice because attention is elsewhere.
DON'T LOOK UP focuses more on the second problem.
The information may be available.
The event may be visible.
But visibility doesn't guarantee attention.
You cannot respond to something you never register.

Modern humans live inside an unprecedented volume of information.
News.
Messages.
Alerts.
Videos.
Advertisements.
Emails.
Posts.
Headlines.
Warnings.
Recommendations.
The challenge is no longer simply obtaining information.
It's deciding what deserves attention.
Important signals compete with trivial signals using many of the same mechanisms.
BREAKING NEWS.
FLASH SALE.
SEVERE WEATHER ALERT.
SOMEONE LIKED YOUR PHOTO.
Good luck, nervous system.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗡𝗢𝗜𝗦𝗘
When everything asks for attention, people adapt by ignoring things.
That's necessary.
But filtering creates another problem:
What if the important thing resembles the noise?
What if the extraordinary arrives on a day when you're already overloaded?
What if reality doesn't know how to optimize its thumbnail?
Meteor impact probability:
SIGNIFICANT.
Engagement rate:
DISAPPOINTING.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗡𝗢𝗥𝗠𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗭𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡
Surveillance demonstrates the same process.
The first camera in a room may be noticeable.
After enough exposure, it becomes furniture.
Doorbell cameras.
Traffic cameras.
Security cameras.
Dashcams.
Drones.
Phones.
We adapt.
The technology doesn't necessarily disappear.
Our awareness of it does.
That's more interesting than hiding the camera.
Put it right there.
Eventually nobody looks.

Philosopher Jeremy Bentham's Panopticon was a prison design built around the possibility of observation.
A central observer could potentially watch prisoners without prisoners always knowing whether they were being watched at a particular moment.
Later thinkers used the Panopticon as a broader metaphor for surveillance and social control.
The important psychological idea is simple:
You don't need constant observation if people believe observation is possible.
Today the tower can fit on a wall.
Or fly behind you.

But DON'T LOOK UP adds another twist.
Traditional surveillance anxiety says:

That's an impressive engagement metric.

The central figure needs to remain ordinary.
He's not a conspiracy theorist.

That's essential because the design isn't really about one character.
He's us.
Ordinary clothes.
Ordinary phone.
Ordinary behavior.
Extraordinary surroundings.
The less unusual he appears, the stronger everything around him becomes.

Showing him from the side makes the downward angle of his head unmistakable.
You immediately understand where his attention is directed.
It also creates a natural path across the shirt.

The phone should remain small but visually unmistakable.

That's why it matters.
The strangest thing in the scene may be the thing we've stopped considering strange.

The saucer provides the classic Official Narrative mystery.
It should be recognizable without becoming the main subject.
If it dominates the design, the shirt becomes another UFO encounter.
Instead, it's almost background information.
That's the joke.

The design doesn't need to explain that hierarchy explicitly.
The viewer discovers it while looking around the image.
Ironically, the viewer is paying more attention than the character.

The man and phone should read first.
Then the eye begins discovering what he's missing.

The joke depends on discovery.
You initially see a guy looking at his phone.
Then you realize the entire world around him is trying to become the main story.

Black negative space is especially useful here because the design contains several separate elements.
The shirt itself can become the environment.
No heavy rectangular background is needed.
The man, drone, camera, UFO and meteor can exist as isolated visual signals connected by composition rather than scenery.
That keeps the image readable and prevents the concept from becoming a crowded poster.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗢𝗟𝗢𝗥 𝗣𝗔𝗟𝗘𝗧𝗧𝗘
Muted blue-grey and cream tones keep the technology and figure connected to the Official Narrative palette.
Small restrained accents can help separate important details, but the scene doesn't need bright spectacle.
In fact, keeping the UFO and surveillance elements somewhat subdued reinforces the idea that they're present without demanding attention.
The meteor can provide the strongest directional energy.
The phone doesn't need any.

That immediately creates suspicion.

The design then answers with:

It also plays against the character's behavior.
Nobody actually needs to tell him not to look up.
He's already complying.
Possibly the easiest directive ever issued.

Digital businesses can make money from advertising, subscriptions, purchases and engagement.
That gives attention economic value.
Companies naturally compete for it.
This doesn't mean every app is designed by villains trying to hypnotize humanity.
It means incentives matter.
If keeping someone engaged helps a business, systems will often be optimized toward engagement.
The meteor has no marketing department.
This puts it at a competitive disadvantage.

Technology expands perception.

The question is whether we still decide where our attention goes.
