But bravery does not mean fear disappears.
Sometimes bravery means understanding exactly how dangerous something is and going anyway.

Every possible scenario gets rehearsed because when something goes wrong in space:
Calling roadside assistance is difficult.

Because the nearest hardware store has terrible hours.

Apollo 13 became one of the most famous examples of crisis management in spaceflight after an oxygen tank exploded during the 1970 mission.

A frightened astronaut's eyes are especially important.
Wide.
Focused.
Searching.
Fear is readable immediately through the eyes even when the rest of the face is partially obscured.
Inside a helmet, they become the emotional center.

Long missions require careful attention to sleep, workload, interpersonal dynamics, stress and mental performance.
Space agencies study human factors because technological systems are only as useful as the people operating them.
You can design a perfect spacecraft.
Then put five humans inside for eighteen months.
New engineering discipline begins.

There is another kind of fear space creates.
Not immediate physical danger.
Scale.
The realization that Earth is tiny compared with the universe.

The human imagination handles production.

Horror often becomes stronger when information is withheld.
The viewer looks where the character looks.
We search the darkness.
We try to understand the fear.

The visor becomes a natural boundary between safety and whatever exists outside.
That boundary should remain visually obvious.

Showing a monster gives it limits.

Shape.

Once visible, the audience begins understanding it.
